I’ve run email lists for my clients that brought in millions of dollars in sales every year.
It enabled me to “cut my teeth” at copywriting.
I was able to write an email, send it out, and get feedback fast. I’ve written and sent about 1,500 different emails to several different lists.
This enabled me to see what hooks and stories work and which usually fall flat. And here are a few of the things I learned doing that.
Lesson #1: Email works.
Even multi-millionaires open it regularly. I’m shocked at the CEOs and billionaires who open my email within 10 minutes of me sending it to them.
Here’s how I know this. I use a sales tool called Sales Handy to see if people have opened my email. I have a “Dream 100” List of my dream clients. I emailed them to connect and see if I could create ads for their business. One responded to my email in less than 10 minutes. Another opened it in less than 30 minutes.
Now, this isn’t a reflection on them. I often check my email regularly. The human brain is designed to give us a Dopamine Reward when we check our email. So, we check out email regularly.
Lesson #2: Email every day.
I’m flabbergasted at the marketers who have a list and don’t email every day. They’re missing out on millions of dollars in sales. I’m not exaggerating. You should email every day, 7 days a week. Or, if your prospects do not work weekends, then email 5 days a week.
Lesson #3: Email is great for storytelling.
Tell people you’re life’s story. Every email should sell, so you’ll get lots of sales. But, it’s also a great way to build a bond with your list – especially when you tell them about similar struggles you’ve gone thru. Shared struggle binds people together. So, leverage this for sales.
Lesson #4: Most of your emails should have a sales pitch.
I know I’m breaking this rule by sending you this newsletter. But, don’t be afraid to sell in every email. Or at least 80% of them. Stop doing “Content Marketing” or sending “Value Emails.”
Here’s a real-life example. I’m on 2 email lists for people who teach “How to make more money as a copywriter.” One does 95% “Content Marketing.” I’ve invested about $1,200 into his training.
Another guy sells similar “How to make more money as a copywriter” Training. He sends about 50% Sales Pitches and 50% content. I’ve invested about $4,000 in his training and will probably spend a lot more. Make sense?
Lesson #5: Recycle your best emails.
If an email works great, then send it out again 2-3 months later. People won’t remember it. And no one is going to complain. Ok, maybe a few will complain. But, people complain about everything. After all, complaining is the national pastime.
Lesson #6: Test small and scale.
Some of my clients make $4,000 to $8,000 per day from each email they send. If your average email brings in $4,000 a day in revenue, then one bad email can cost you $4,000.
So, test before you scale. Test new emails to 25% of your list. That way if it bombs, you don’t lose $4,000. And, if it converts, you can send it to your entire list the next day. The same rule applies to Facebook Ads, which is why email and Facebook Ads are so similar.
Lesson #7: One good email can double or triple sales compared to an average email.
Good email copy is worth the money. Yes, I know I’m pitching myself here. But, it’s true. I’ve seen good emails double and triple sales. So consider investing in a skilled email copywriter.
Lesson #8: Follow a proven framework.
I’ve written over a thousand different sales emails, sent them, and watched the results. I’ve read thousands of other marketers’ emails. And, I’ve seen that most of them fall into similar frameworks.
Here are a few of those proven “Email” Copywriting Frameworks:
- The Emotional/Crazy Story Email.
- Tell them about a Benefit.
- A Secret the Most Successful People are Hiding from You.
- The simple Story Email.
- The Shock Email.
- Make a big promise.
- The Secret Email.
- The Hit Their Pain Email
- The Cry in Your Beer with them Email
These have all made my clients a lot of money. If you want more info on them, then let me know. I actually wrote a book on Email Copywriting about 3 years ago. It’s titled The Ultimate Sales Email. You can buy a copy on Amazon for $19.95.
Lesson #9: Long emails work.
For example, my best-converting email of 2019 was 339 words long and didn’t drop the link until the very end. But, it generated well over six figures in revenue for my client. That email is still being “recycled” today and it’s converting. It has gotten worn out, so my client doesn’t send it as much anymore.
Lesson #10: Switch things up with your emailing. it up.
Don’t get stuck in a rut with the same old same old emails over and over again:
- Send short emails, long emails, medium-length emails, etc.
- Tell crazy stories, make promises, and shock your readers with a shock email.
- Send hypey pitch emails and more intensive “Content Pitch” Emails.
Whatever you do, don’t be boring and predictable! Well, it’s time to wrap up. I hope this was helpful.
